Guernica Reproduction Covered at UN
NEW YORK.- The "Guernica" work by Pablo Picasso at the entrance of the Security Council of the United Nations has been covered with a curtain. The reason for covering this work is that this is the place where diplomats make statements to the press and have this work as the background. The Picasso work features the horrors of war. On January 27 a large blue curtain was placed to cover the work.
Fred Eckhard, press secretary of the U.N. said: "It is an appropriate background for the cameras." He was questioned as to why the work had been covered.
A diplomat stated that it would not be an appropriate background if the ambassador of the United States at the U.N. John Negroponte, or Powell, talk about war surrounded with women, children and animals shouting with horror and showing the suffering of the bombings.
This work is a reproduction of the Guernica that was donated by Nelson A. Rockefeller to the U.N. in 1985.

Demokrati, USA
For weeks, United For Peace and Justice (UFPJ), a national coalition of several hundred organizations, has been negotiating in good faith with the New York City Police Department in preparation for U.S. participation in the unprecedented global peace demonstration on February 15th - "The World Says No To War." On that day millions of people in more than 300 cities around the world will oppose a U.S. war against Iraq on that day. Hundreds of busloads of demonstrators will be coming to New York from points around the country to join with New Yorkers from all of the city's diverse communities in a rebuke to the Bush administration's threatened bombing and invasion of Iraq.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the police department have been blocking our efforts to organize a peaceful and nonviolent protest. It took a series of meeting before they finally agreed to give us a permit to assemble at 49th Street and First Avenue, near the United Nations. They are still refusing to grant a permit to march.
UFPJ's lawyers, the New York Civil Liberties Union, has filed suit against the Mayor and the police to obtain the necessary permits for a march. A federal judge will rule on the matter on Monday, Feb. 10.

Powells Irak-billeder beviser ... ingenting

Weapons declaration
From Professor Ken Coates
Sir, Jack Straw claims that Iraq's declaration about its weapons of mass destruction, submitted to the United Nations in December, "was neither full, accurate, nor complete" (Comment, February 5).
The elected members of the United Nations Security Council will have to take Mr Straw's word for it, since we understand that more than 8,000 of the declaration's 11,800 pages were omitted when it was circulated to them.
The full dossier was given to the United Nations and transported to New York, where by some mechanism it came into the hands of the United States Administration, which promised to copy it for members of the Security Council. In the event, two thirds of the declaration were withheld from the ten non-permanent members.
I wrote to these members asking whether British press reports on these matters were true (an inquiry to the office of the Secretary-General had produced no response).
The current President of the Security Council, Joschka Fischer, confirmed these facts. In a letter dated Monday, February 3, his office writes:
"The facts of the case as you present them are correct. In fact the Iraqi statement of around 12,000 pages of 8th December was given in full only to the five permanent members of the Security Council."
Who authorised this substantial deletion?
Yours sincerely,
KEN COATES

Aldermaston Compensation Order for Ulla Røder
Peace activist Ulla Roder has been ordered to pay £370 compensation to the Atomic Weapon Establishment at Aldermaston for cutting a small piece of a fence at the site during the Trident Ploughshares disarmament camp there in May 2001.
The trial, on a charge of criminal damage, took place today in Newbury Magistrates Court. Although represented, Ulla herself undertook to explain to the magistrate that her action was justified under the Nuremberg Principles which obliges citizens to observe humanitarian law.
Ulla said: "Although he avoided any reference to the Principles in his judgment he was listening intently to my argument. I did explain to him that my conscience would not allow me to pay compensation to Aldermaston."
Ulla was also ordered to pay £60 court costs. Her co-accused, Allen O’Keefe, was tried in January and was ordered to pay £750 compensation, double Ulla’s penalty
