New Directions in Peace and Conflict Research: Non-violent Strategies for Confronting Global Terrorism and for Promoting Peaceful Social Change
A CPS research conference, University of Tromsø, 7th-9th September 2005
Conference theme
The nature and political potential of non-violence continues to be a central concern of Peace Studies in general and of the Centre for Peace Studies (University of Tromsø) in particular. This conference aims to explore the possibilities of non-violence in the context of two key contemporary themes of global conflict: terrorism and its variety of responses, and social resistance and political activism.
Conference goals
The principal aims of the conference are to illuminate the research dimensions of these specific themes and more generally to examine the character and purpose of Peace Studies both as a multidisciplinary discipline and as a catalyst for non-violent social change. While the geographical setting of the conference is the relatively peaceful far north of Europe, since our focus is global as well as regional, we invite contributions from people living in other, more conflicted, areas as well.
Both practically orientated and more theoretical reflections on the conference themes are invited, and should take the form, in the first instance, of paper proposals or abstracts sent to the conference organizer. We especially welcome submissions that address the research dimensions of peace studies.
Submission information
Please e-mail abstracts of proposed papers to linsan@sv.uit.no by May 30th 2005. Abstracts should be between 250-500 words with double spaced pages. A committee of three peace researchers will evaluate them. All accepted presentations will be published in a conference working paper. The final decision on participation will be announced on June 23rd 2005. The conference fee is 1200, - NOK for scientists and 600, - for students. This will entitle the participants admission to all presentations, workshops and social arrangements, and to receive a copy of the conference programme.
