Latin: 1. Tidsskrift, publikation, der udkommer periodevis; med mellemrum.
2. En af en række publikationer der regelmæssigt udkommer under den samme titel og uden at stile mod en afslutning, og som udgør en mere eller mindre afsluttet helhed.
Dødfødte tidsskrifter er tidsskrifter, der aldrig når ud over det første nummer eller de første numre.
Periodica registreres i nationalbibliografier og tildeles et International Standard Serial Number. ISSN er et internationalt identifikationsnummer for periodica, der blev indført i 1971 som en parallel til ISBN nummeret for bøger. ISSN-systemet blev vedtaget som international standard ISO 3297 i 1975.
Ifølge Det kongelige Bibliotek er ISSN Network 'en international organisation, som er oprettet indenfor rammerne af UNESCO's informationssystem UNISIST. Organisationen har et internationalt center i Paris og regionale og nationale centre i hele verden, inklusive det danske center ISSN Danmark. ISSN Danmark blev oprettet i 1976 i Det Kongelige Biblioteks Danske Afdeling. Registreringen af periodika foretages på grundlag af det materiale, der indgår ved pligtafleveringen fra bogtrykkere eller forlag, eller som udgivere og brugere frivilligt indsender med anmodning om registrering.'

'Ulrich's is named after its originator, Carolyn Farquhar Ulrich, the Head of Periodicals at the New York Public Library. Ulrich's was first published in 1932 as " Periodicals Directory: A Classified Guide to a Selected List of Current Periodicals Foreign and Domestic ." This title continued through the third edition published in 1938. Then, with the 4th edition (1943), the title was changed to honor Ms. Ulrich and became Ulrich's Periodicals Directory: A Selected Guide to Current Periodicals, Inter-American Edition (with a focus on non-European titles because of the difficulty in getting information during WWII). From 1943-1965, the title was Ulrich's Periodicals Directory . Then, with the 11th edition in 1965, it became known as Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory , the title it held until the publication of the 39th edition in 2000, when it reverted to an earlier title, Ulrich's Periodicals Directory . It also incorporated Irregular Serials and Annuals in 1988.'
