Yemen blev koloniseret af Ethiopien og senere af Portugal i årene 1513–1538 og 1547–1548 og af Det ottomanske rige i årene 1538–1547 og 1548–1645. Efterfølgende blev Yemen regeret af Lahej sultanatet til 1838. Byen Aden i Sydyemen var 1888-1967 strategisk vigtige geopolitisk  britiske protektorater (Øst- og Vestaden) , hvis position bl.a. gjorde det muligt at sikre post- og handelsruter fa Egypten og Syrien til Indien mod pirater. Nordyemen kongedømme  1918-1962. Militærkup: 1962, efterfølgende borgerkrig. Nord- og Sydyemen forenes i 1990.
