'In 1942 the
U.S. War Relocation Authority hired Dorothea Lange to photograph
the internment of approximately 120,000 Japanese Americans. Lange,
now a world-famous documentary photographer, made more than 800
photographs. The military evidently found them so critical that
they were impounded for the duration of the war. Afterwards they
were quietly placed in the U.S. National Archives where they are in
the public domain--but for years only a handful were published, and
they were never exhibited as a group. Now a selection of the
photographs, approximately one-eighth of the total, have been
published in Impounded: Dorothea Lange and the Censored Images of
Japanese American Internment (Norton, 2006), edited by Linda Gordon
and Gary Y. Okihiro. And Gordon has introduced some 13 photos at
Japan Focus. "I came to these photographs in the process of writing
a biography of Dorothea Lange," Gordon writes, but "their relevance
to internment-without-charges today seemed to me to require
bringing them to public attention." Japan Focus presents a
substantial selection of the photos in large format with the
original captions.'Auschwitzdagen ; Det danske Hjælpekorps ; Freundeskreis Carl von Ossietzky ; Elizabeth Fry ; the German Emergency Committee of the Society of Friends ; Hjælpefond 1940 ; Emily Hobhouse ; Karen Jeppe ; Den norske Damekomitee ; Rote Hilfe ; Joshua Rowntree ; Skandia-Hjælp ; Hildegunt Zassenhaus.
